Say Us by Zeus
LABEL: Arts & Crafts
Toronto rock band Zeus, combines vintage vibes and indie rock sensibilities on their new album Say Us. The record provides an eclectic mix of sonic layering with smart vocal choices on twelve ear-grabbing songs. Most of the tracks are also complimented by creative, tastefully structured background vocals and an acoustic piano that, at times, sounds like it was recorded in a small saloon in the 1920’s. The lead vocals play on traditional melodies putting you in mind of a sped up Chris Martin meets an aggressive John Lennon, especially evident in “Greater Times On The Wayside.”
“Say Us is a tastefully constructed rock album loaded with a variety of interesting and inspired songs.”
Zeus was able to conjure up fantastic guitar tones that range from reverb soaked surfer guitar “Fever Of The Times” to the sleeping slide guitar performance on “At The Risk Of Repeating Myself” that would have felt at home jamming on the tail end of “Layla” with Eric Clapton. Creative mixing and production techniques give the album a second life on a good set of headphones. "The River By The Garden" features the bass panned entirely to the left side and the drums almost completely on the right side while lead vocals and guitar are placed in the center of the mix. A rarity in modern music. Say Us is a tastefully constructed rock album loaded with a variety of interesting and inspired songs. It’s definitely worth checking out and not just for its super bad ass album cover!
