Hunger and Thirst by Typhoon
LABEL: Tender Loving Empire
I gave Typhoon’s second full length release, Hunger and Thirst, a few good listens before I looked online to see what their story was. It blew my mind to see the size of the band, as I assumed their many luscious orchestrations were most likely performed by studio musicians, as is the way with most indie music, when an orchestra is involved. No wonder the arrangements are so solid and organic—the orchestra is the band.
An average of 10 musicians make up Typhoon, though this number has been known to increase at will. It’s something of a miracle that a rock band of this size can work together to create what they have on Hunger and Thirst. They don’t kill you with the sheer size of the sound that they are capable of producing, but rather slowly build one instrument at a time. Listening to Typhoon is like a riding on a roller coaster that is gathering momentum, waiting to fall from it’s greatest height. It’s a descent shorter than the build that leads up to it—making the intensity of it all the more significant.
Kyle Morton is Typhoon’s mastermind, and responsible for writing most, if not all of the songs. His lyrics are extremely prolific and the songs are dramatic, tackling heavy subject matter and themes with a lightness that makes the weight bearable, if not ridiculously enjoyable.
Hunger and Thirst can only be described as I would describe the band itself: epic, significant and prolific, at every moment and at every angle. You could scan the scope of the album with a musical magnifying glass, and find nothing wrong, overdone, or out of place. I am close to wanting to say that it’s just about perfect.
