Zeroes EP by Suuns
LABEL: Secretly Canadian
There’s something gritty and darkly urgent about Montreal-based band Suun’s debut EP and precursor to the LP, Zeroes QC, which comes out in a couple of weeks. It’s a simple style—immediately obvious within the first few seconds of post-punk inflected opener “Disappearance of Skyscrapers”—but it’s deceptively hard to get right for a lot of bands , and here, they’ve nailed it. Much of that slightly paranoid, captivating feeling hinted at in the song’s title comes through in lead singer Ben Shemie’s plaintive whispering and manic talk-singing delivery, further (and best) evidenced on the gratingly infectious “PVC.” A tension-building sense of minimalism and restraint, especially in the EP’s first songs, gradually gives way to the more accessible, danceable, and louder latter half.
All in all, Zeroes EP is a thoroughly interesting, exciting debut from a band that is already experimenting with sonic concepts many established bands don’t even know exist.
