Girls Come Too by Still Life Still
LABEL: Arts & Crafts || RELEASE: August 25, 2009
“Some music really demands you sit up and
pay attention—and this is one of those LPs.”
From the very first track, the Toronto-based Still Life Still don't leave many questions about what you are going to get. A rich multi-level sound, with amazing texture from each of those layers coming forward with the right fevered pitch. No, its not the first time we've heard a large band play something like this—and if that bothers you, the,n you are going to miss out on a fun little album. Arts & Crafts knows how to pick bands that have that spark of inspiration that makes them a great pleasure to listen to every time over.
Following up the preview LP a couple months ago, Girls Come Too is a frenetic soundscape with its rich sound building throughout the entire album. It seems like its a demanding pace to get from song to song—driving and spurring the listener forward. The album crescendos with the staccatto outro beats on “Knives in Cartoons.” With the exception of the final track, I found this to be a brilliant composition, engaging and lovely. Some music really demands you sit up and pay attention—and this is one of those LPs.
Still Life Still packs in a lot of joy, a lot of idealism and that is a pleasant thing. Listening, one hears their enjoyment of music. They've played together for ten years—from their school days and there is a reflection of that. The layers wouldn't work without that intimate familiarity. And the camaraderie lacking from this music would leave it a sadder, bleaker release.
