Semi-Circle by Shigeto
LABEL: Ghostly International
For his first release under the pedigree Ghostly label, electronic sound-smith Shigeto (a.k.a. Zach Saginaw) has taken the task very seriously. Minimal in length, Semi-Circle is a powerful and even collection of material to be chosen as a prologue to his forthcoming full-length. There is a satisfying ”˜completeness’ to the record, and it works remarkably well as its own statement while demonstrating the capabilities of the artist.
Shigeto incorporates elements of electronica, dubstep, audio treatment and even moments of ambient and traditional folk into his engaging palette. Heavy beats are overlaid with rich washes of electronic beauty and glitch blissdom. Shigeto ties his instrumental pieces together with a loose concept-narrative that feels a bit labored to the point, but luckily, isn't so pervasive as to distract from his obvious musical skills.
