Oohs & Aahs by Say Hi
LABEL: Barsuk
Eric Elbogen is becoming a bit of a fixture and prestige point in the Seattle indie scene: six full length albums out in almost the same number of years, continued brilliance even at the fast rate of creation. Like so many artists, he does almost all of the work on the albums himself, in the guise of Say Hi.
On Oohs & Aahs his usual lyrical wit and charm are back in full force, providing the heart of the tapestry the rest of the work creates. The guitar work on 'One, Two ... One' is quite lovely, with a warm tonal quality that blends into something that lets you forget the synth that occupies the rest of the album and then slips directly back into low-fi roots on the next track, Audrey. This sort of shift is what creates a brilliant journey for us to travel through.
Overall, the work comes together very well, though with many artists that travel such an interesting path on an album, some people are going to find tracks that pull them out of the experience. The full package is part of what makes it interesting, the great sense of variety is part of the charm.
