Rated O by Oneida
LABEL: Jagjaguwar ||| RELEASE: July 7, 2009
The band Oneida is one that lacks easy definition in the world of trying to tag everything. There are so many influences heard within their work but none of those influences can be said to truly be their style. With heavy repetition and many long tracks—each of the three discs/parts that make up Rated O have a song clocking in at ten minutes or more in length with a twenty minute finale piece—there is quite a lot to get into. But it never felt long on any of the listens so far.
This isn't music for everyone, but that doesn't make it any less brilliant. The vocals are often deep in the mix or haunting with heavy handed tonal manipulation on many of the tracks. The instruments form a carefully organized cacophony, walking a fine line between something transformative and something that is simply a din of noise. This is not music to listen to casually, it is something you have to focus on and absorb into your very being to appreciate. The heavy guitar and strange use of keyboards mixed in with the intent drumming forms a brilliant mixture of a hard but thoughtful sound.
Despite being around for over ten years now, Rated O was this reviewers first experience and it was wonderful. I'm not truly able to compare it to the full catalog for the longtime fans, but I'm a convert.
