Good Morning, Magpie by Murder by Death
LABEL: Vagrant
Murder By Death is a unique group of throwback musicians that rely as much on creating dark musical images as they do writing songs about whisky. The true uniqueness however, isn’t in the attempt, it’s in the execution and on their recent release, Good Morning, Magpie, they have executed flawlessly.
The excellent work of cello player Sarah Balliet and the Johnny Cash howl of lead singer Adam Turla give the album the bulk of its musical emotion. While the drum and bass maintain a unified, chest thumping low end. As the tracks roll on, the excellent cohesiveness of the instrument work really begin to stand out. When complimented by creative lyrics that are both fun and emotionally provoking, the album develops a strong sense of soul and identity.
Good Morning, Magpie features Celtic and midwestern musical influences while retaining a modern appeal. From the barn danceable “Yes” and “On The Streets Below” to the guttural sounds of "White Noise" there is something very special about the music they’ve created here.
