This interview was conducted in July 2010. Be sure to check out links to many of Lynn's contributions found below the Q&A's.
Where do you live?
I live in Astoria, Queens, NY
How old are you?
???
Why do you write about music? (Any formal/informal practice of music? Music theory/study?)
I am a musician. I have a band and write music. People don't know who I am, but I want them to listen to me, and give me a chance. Well, I realized that I was a hypocrite, because I used to be really 'bad' about seeking out new, up and coming musicians and bands... I tended to just listen to what I new I liked. Writing about music, enables me to give back to the music community, by seeking out newer music, and giving my support by both listening to the album, and writing a review.
What is your favorite genre(s) of music?
ROCK it it's many facets is my favorite genre. Closely followed by classical music, specifically romantic music and Bach, and hip-hop.
Who is your favorite artist we have covered? Favorite artist/album you've written about for Groovemine?
Hard to say. Favorite albums that I've reviewed are probably the first two: The Heavy: The House That Dirt Built, and Band Of Skulls, Baby Darling Dollface Honey. Favorite artist, can't say!
What are your favorite albums of 2010, so far, and why?
Typhoon, Hunger And Thirst—Remarkable songwriting, instrumentation, vocals and lyrics. I like 'epic', and it is, indeed, quite epic. The songs start somewhere and built into something insanely powerful and totally somewhere else. Also, Owen Pallett, Heartland. I mentioned that I love classical music as well as ROCK, but what I love even more is a kick-ass rock band, that blends the 2 with expertise and ease. That's what Owen Pallett does in general, but specifically on Heartland. It was the first album I reviewed in 2010, and I think I put it on the top of my yet unknown best of list for the year. Owen Pallett is a genius.
Tell us about your favorite live show?
Lot's of Phish.
What was your favorite music growing up?
When I was a kid/young teenager, I was a ballet dancer, so I listened to and loved a lot of classical music (oh yeah, and Barbara Streisand: I know. I was a very strange kid. And thankfully it was just a phase!)... when I got into rock and writing music, PJ Harvey was probably my first favorite artist, followed by the Doors. I was totally obsessed with The Doors.
What are your favorite music listening moments and/or environments? In other words, how do you like to listen to music?
I love to listen to music at the gym, especially running—I like listening with my headphones on the subway, and walking around NYC. I do a lot of my review writing while listening on the subway. And when I make collage art (something else I do) I love to blast music from my speakers. When bumming around my apartment, I've been liking it quite lately. Quite strange for me, but I'm going with it.
What media outlets do you turn to, other than Groovemine, to stay up on music?
I use podcasts. My favorites are BUTR, Bands Under The Radar, and NPR: All songs considered. I've found awesome bands via these. I also like Other Music, which Groovemine turned me on to. The have sooo much to sample.
