ONEOHTRIX POINT NEVER

Oneohtrix Point Never is the solo project of Brooklyn-based electronic musician Daniel Lopatin. The name of his project is a play on that of a radio station in Boston, Magic 106.7, a station that specializes in soft rock and easy listening, which are descriptors that cannot be applied to Oneohtrix Point Never. Lopatin, the son of two musicians and a graduate of Hampshire College, where he studied aesthetic philosophy and electronic music, contributes to electronic composition an intellectual dimension while, at the same time creating sounds that recall the joy and fun of 70’s science fiction.

As Oneohtrix Point Never, Lopatin has released a trio of cassette-EPs since 2007: Betrayed In The Octagon, Russian Minds, and Zones Without People. Compiled together, they were released as an LP in 2009 as Rifts. In 2010, the LP Returnal was released. The title track came out as 7" with a version that features a lauded collaboration between Lopatin and Antony Hegarty (Antony & the Johnsons). His use of delayed synthesizers and effected vocals create an atmospheric presence reminiscent of the film-score of Blade Runner and the old German synthesizer masters of the 70s and 80s but also, somehow, transport the listener to the not-to-distant 21st century future.
