of Montreal is many things. of Montreal is one of the stalwarts of the Athens, Georgia pop scene. of Montreal is the recording and performing project of one Mr. Kevin Barnes. And of Montreal is one of the many bands still in operation with a tie to the loose Elephant Six collective of the late '90s, a group of like-minded bands centered around that incredibly fertile Southern college town. of Montreal is not, however, predictable.

of Montrel- Skeletal LampingTheir most recent release, Skeletal Lamping, may be bizarre, complicated, and dense, but it's also extremely catchy and packed with slinky grooves that demand a physical response. Instantly ingratiating hooks abound as Kevin Barnes' compositions constantly mutate and shape-shift in ways that defy conventional pop song structure and album sequencing. Nevertheless, the record has its own internal logic, and its many tangents and detours feel entirely intuitive and organic in context. The movements mimic the shapeless, mystifying mingling of thoughts and emotions in the human mind, so even the most deliberately jarring transitions evoke a sudden shift in attention that is recognizable and commonplace, but rarely emulated in mainstream music.

Title: LOVE!

of Montreal is for the person who is into really trippy music.
My favorite release of theres would have to be "Coquelicot Asleep In the Poppies" which is sometimes referred to as their masterpiece, I would agree with this. This album in specific is EXTREMELY trippy, and just when you think you have it figured out, it completely switches direction, which is great, and so tastefully done.
All in all, one of my favorite bands at the moment, though I don't listen to them as much as I'd like to.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
