The German duo of Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary, known as Modeselektor (taking their name from a function on the Roland RE-201), have a strong aversion to labels and being tagged as belonging to any certain style or school. This attitude becomes apparent when listening to the varied songs on their albums ‘Hello Mom!’ and ‘Happy Birthday!’ or on their singles and remixes. Almost every catchphrase from IDM to dubstep to glitch-hop can be applied to one or more of their tracks.

While maintaining a menacing tone on some tracks, Modeselektor manages to create exhilarating and danceable sounds throughout their work. Heavy on bass and hyper twitchiness, their albums can be equally enjoyed on the dance-floor as well as the living room.

Bronsert and Szary met in 1995 and released some tracks on their own labels for a few years before finding their current home at Ellen Allien’s label, BPitch Control in 2001. Since then, they have cultivated a worldwide audience and have worked with musicians such as Thom Yorke, Otto von Schirach, and TTC. Along with Sascha Ring, who also records as Apparat, the two Berliners formed Moderat, releasing an EP in 2002, but because of differences, didn’t follow that up until seven years later with the self-titled LP, Moderat.

Modeselektor will be touring Europe with Sascha Ring as Moderat (the act named Resident Advisor’s Best Live Act of the Year) until they hit Seattle to headline Decibel Festival in September 2010.

"Modeselektor’s adaptation of urban catchwords like electro-IDM, booty house, Euro-crunk, continental grime, ghetto-bass, dubstep and such even get the most bored know-it-all[s] off the barstools." —BPitch Control promotional material

“Bronsert and Szary are ultimately navigating through the creation of their own language, allowing it to breathe and develop naturally by its own will.” —TinyMixTapes
