A SUNNY DAY IN GLASGOW
LABEL: Mis Ojos Discos ||| TEXT: Cody Filardi ||| PHOTO: Ever Nalens
The definition of a shoegaze band is one that hardly makes eye contact, introspectively playing their music, letting it exist without too much explanation. While A Sunny Day In Glasgow hails from Philly their name still pays homage to the land where shoegaze and dream pop began, it is also where friends Ben Daniels and Ever Nalens lived before returning to Philly to form the band in 2006. While the lineup is constantly changing, the members still manage to create and maintain an air of whispy vocals and ethereal guitar that releases a static that seems to stay with you after every listen. Fronted by two long haired girls, with light voices (originally Ben Daniel's twin sisters), one of them sometimes singing a few octaves below the other and both voices somewhat drowned out by the instruments (in proper shoe-gaze fashion). The instruments and the vocals seem to be on the same wavelength, neither one of them are intended to be the focal point, for when they get together they become something more, an incoherent mixture of feedback that becomes more of an otherworldly beckoning.
When ASDIG plays live it is usually held in a pretty intimate setting, usually very dark, with lights sometimes strung around the keyboards and mics. When they do acoustic sets (which I personally prefer) they are sometimes sitting and since they have been referred to as a freakier version of Fleetwood Mac they've become accustomed to performing Fleetwood Mac covers at their shows. Their most recent album, Ashes Grammar was recorded while the band was making several changes to their lineup yet the album is still incredibly consistent in its cosmic beckoning. Some favorite tracks of mine are “The White Witch,” “Passionate Introverts,” “Headphone Space and Close Chorus.”
